Family Photo...
The picture at right was taken at my brother Todd's cottage at Shuswap Lake, in August of 1990. I will post a more recent photo when I can get the whole family in one place, (which is not easy to do!)
Family History...
I, Jeanne Morrison (nee Dragland) am the daughter of Lawrence Dragland and Nona Annon. I had a wonderful childhood growing up in Lethbridge and Calgary, and spent most of my summer vacations at “The Farm”. The farm was a part of the original homestead of Michael Dragland, in Southern Alberta, which had been split between his sons: Oscar, Rudolph, Ted, Oren and Ken. My grandfather was Rudolph, and it is his property that I refer to as “The Farm”.
Many of our play activities were actually chores in disguise; such as riding the stone-boat pulled by the tractor and gathering stones from the field; or moving bales into the barn loft and arranging them in such a way that we had “Forts”.
Many times we would be sent to find the cattle in the pasture and would be gone much longer than necessary. As the pasture separated my grandfather's farm from Ted’s, we would inevitably end up over there with our cousins (Ted’s grandchildren).
On occasion we would head the other direction and stop by Vern’s (son of Orville, son of Oscar). They had horses. I remember one in particular, named Jeff – a lovely little pinto who threw me on more than one occasion. If we continued down that road about a mile we would come to Conquerville, a small cluster of buildings that included a community school, a post office, a small convenience store and the children who’s parents ran the store and post office.
There is a picture of the farm posted on this web site, taken of course when the property was in its prime. The buildings are gone now, and as far as I know Vern and his son Neil are farming all of what was originally Michael Dragland’s property. Where there were many families living in the area not so many years ago, now most of the farmers commute between town and country.
After school I started work in Calgary and that’s where I met my husband, Don. We moved to Vancouver in 1973 and live in the Point Grey area of the city (near the University of British Columbia). We only have Iain at home now – he is 16 years old. Calum and Graham are both attending Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Our daughter Sharlene lives in Sudbury, Ontario, with her husband Dr. Robert Annis and their 4 children; Paris, Paloma, Liam and Lochlain.
